I dreamed of my dad again that night, and I was frightened. But when I woke this time, I let go of my pillow, brushed the tears off my face, then rolled over and went back to sleep.

Shane kicked off his shoes and fell back on his bed; one arm folded over his eyes. He was in trouble, and he knew it. Spending the evening with Emma was one of the best and worst ideas he’d ever had.

He’d told her about Ryan, and he was glad. Although it just about killed him, he made it through the story without completely breaking down. A small boulder inside his heart had cracked from finally talking about it again. He rarely even talked with his parents about Ryan these days because he knew that the subject brought on a fresh wave of grief. The way he’d reacted right after his brother’s death, he couldn’t have them thinking he would ever retreat into that place again. And his friends—although he had known them his entire life, he didn’t think they even remembered anymore. When you’re young, unless you’ve been through that kind of debilitating pain and can relate, life moves on at lightning-speed, and things are forgotten quickly.

He knew from the look on Emma’s face that telling her was the right thing to do. He studied her through eyes blurred with tears. Her eyes were closed as she seemed to drift into a place of self-awareness that she indeed was not alone; at least that’s how he interpreted it when she reached for his hand and held it.

Maybe Emma had a breakthrough in her fragile beliefs about men. He’d prayed for one since the day they met, never more so than tonight. A lot of men sucked, some were downright terrible. But some men were good to the core. Take Old Will, take himself. He could only hope to be half as good as his old neighbor, but half as good as Will was better than nearly everyone else. He knew it. He believed it.

He only hoped Emma would believe it too.
