Chapter Fifteen

Hadley turned off her alarm. Luna wasn’t in bed anymore. She must’ve already gotten up for breakfast. Or maybe she went to her room in the middle of the night.

Not that it mattered. Hadley needed to find out if there was school today.

After yesterday, she would gladly take a day off. Ellie was still not speaking to her, which was fine. If she wanted to be pissy because Hadley was hanging out with Lucy, let her.

Ellie obviously wasn’t the friend she’d always pretended to be. If she cared more about the fact that Hadley never told her about Duke than she cared about Hadley’s heart-crushing grief over his death, then Hadley was better off without her. In fact, maybe she never told Ellie because deep down she knew her friend wasn’t what she pretended to be.

They were, after all, actors. Always getting the good roles.

Maybe that was the only reason they were friends in the first place. Ellie might have only wanted the status.

How could she have not seen that sooner?

It made her wish she’d actually told Lucy about her pregnancy. To give Ellie something to really be upset about. But Hadley had chickened out. It was still her secret to bear.

Hadley shoved Ellie from her mind and checked her phone for updates on school closures as she got up. The switch didn’t turn on the light, so that was a good sign.

On social media, all the kids were celebrating the day off.

Just to be sure, she checked the school’s website.

The district was closed for the day.

She got back into bed and snuggled under the covers, taking in the good news. An extra day to get her homework done and an excuse to avoid Ellie. She wouldn’t have to deal with anybody questioning her about Nate or teasing her about Duke.

Jerks. What kind of people ridiculed someone whose boyfriend had been murdered?

She couldn’t wait to graduate and get out of this tiny town full of small-minded people.

Hadley started to close out the social media app when a news article appeared in her feed. Nate’s name was in the headline, next to a photo of a charred car.

One that looked like it could be Nate’s.

The phone fell from her grasp and bounced on the mattress. She grabbed it and clicked the link. Skimmed it, her pulse drumming in her ears.

It was as bad as it looked.

The burned car was found deep in the forest by a lost hiker who’d gotten stuck in the storm. He’d stumbled upon the destroyed car, partially covered by debris. The hiker had stayed in it all night, claiming that it had saved his life by providing protection from the elements.

According to the article, all of the identifying information had been removed from the car, but they were certain it was the same make and model as the missing teen’s. Someone had gone to great lengths to cover it up and hide the identity.

Her stomach lurched. She dropped the phone and ran to the bathroom, just in time to throw up in the toilet.
