“HEY, CONRAD. IT’S JUST me, Emily. Your EX-WIFE. I just met a friend of yours, Becka ...”

Emily trailed off and let silence fall on the voicemail for a moment, “She had some interesting things to tell me that you’d said about me. I’d sure like to talk about them. Give me a call.”

Emily hung up and resisted the urge to throw her phone across the room. She was still boiling after the confrontation with Becka and, after leaving Andrea’s and returning to her apartment, she had continued to drink.

“I can’t believe the nerve of him,” she talked out loud to herself as she lay on the floor in her living room and sipped honey jack from a straw without having to sit up. “What a fucking cunt!”

She picked up her phone and decided to call Anika. No answer there either, so Emily decided to leave another voicemail, “Hey Anika ... I’m not sure what is going on, but some bitch down this way, who knows Conrad apparently, says that he said that she knows I cheated on him and left him for a woman .... I am not sure who was blabbing bullshit or who started rumors, but I really need an ear right now. Call me if you can.”

Emily finished her drink and stumbled her way to the bathroom to run a bath. Water always made her happy. She sat on the edge of the tub, carefully taking off her socks and then steadying herself to take off the rest of her clothes so as not to fall over. Just as she was removing her blouse, her cell sounded with a text message. It was Anika.

Sorry I missed your call. We were just playing a game.

Emily paused as she read the text. Her stomach lurched as her intuition tingled with what was just out of reach of her. The same nagging feeling that had been at her all evening.

No worries. Who all is over?

Emily waited for a response as she got into the tub. Ten minutes passed, and she started to become agitated. Anika’s text was abrupt and impersonal. Furling her brow, she sunk under the water and blew out all her air. She stayed under for as long as she could, then popped her head up and gasped for air. She noticed that her phone was flashing with a text.

Conrad and the girls are here.

Emily read and reread the text. Confusion set in first, then anger. She told me our friendship was more important. She told me she disliked him just as much as I did and that she supported me. Now she’s voluntarily hanging out with him and my kids. Emily’s internal dialogue started to feel shaky and jealous.

Oh? Emily texted back.

She didn’t really expect a response this time from her text. And, if she were honest with herself, didn’t want one. Emily drained the tub and brushed her teeth. Leaving her hair unbrushed, she slathered lotion on her face and crawled into bed.

Her skin was sensitive from the hot bath and the anger coursing through her.
