The last several days have felt like a dream. Steph and I have grown closer than ever, like we’ve turned a new page in our relationship. I wake up with her in my arms every day, and I go to sleep with her body wrapped around mine. We’ve shared so much about ourselves that it feels like there are no inhibitions. We’re just enjoying being happy with each other.

But no matter how amazing each day is with her, I can’t shake the feeling of something dark lurking just around the corner. The reality is we’re in denial because nothing has changed with our situation. Steph isn’t living with me because she chose to, or because we’re at that place in our relationship. It’s so I can keep her safe from him . . . the psychotic asshole she’s still legally married to. While she’s filed the papers, I have no idea if Daryl is formulating a response to file or planning another kidnap attempt. My stomach churns at the thought. I’ve been too chickenshit to ask her how things are going, but I need to—not just so I can protect her if need be, but also so she knows I’m here for her. I can’t hide from the truth of our situation just because it makes me uncomfortable.

“Hey, baby.”

My thoughts are interrupted by Steph walking through the front door and tossing her bag on the floor. She looks tired. She’s been back teaching at the studio for a week. She’s been gone before the sun is up, and back home well after it’s gone down.

“Hey,” I say, tossing my arm around her shoulders and pulling her in for a kiss. I don’t let go right away though. I wrap my other arm around her and let it linger for a moment. She tilts her head and looks up at me.

“Everything okay?” she asks.

“Yeah, I uh—I feel like we haven’t talked about the divorce lately and what’s going on with that.” I instantly feel her stiffen in my arms and wish I could take it back.

“Yeah,” she says, pulling away from me and walking over to the fridge to grab a soda. “I’ve been meaning to talk to you, actually. Think I just was avoiding it.”

My stomach drops because that’s not what I was hoping to hear.

“Why’s that?” I ask, my voice flat and tense.

“Can we go sit in the living room to talk?” she asks and I nod, following her to the couch.

“I know we haven’t talked about things lately, and truthfully, I’ve been avoiding it because things have been so great, but that’s not fair to you. I know I should have said something sooner, because avoiding it is only going to make things worse, but—” Her voice trails off.

“Steph, what’s going on? Should have told me what?” She’s scaring me.

“I met with Celeste Slade last week. She’s a lawyer and I wanted to run things by her, but once we talked, she told me to sit tight and think things through before I made a decision, which is what I’ve been doing this week.
