The record keeperâs room was chilly, despite the warmth trickling through from the furnaces below, and my progress through the towering stacks of orders was painfully slow. Staring at the open book, I winced at the error Iâd just made, the scratched-out word glaring at me from the pristine page. How could I be expected to concentrate? Iâd barely slept a wink last night, instead mulling over my conversation with Sirain, as I walked the length of my room until my thighs ached.
I hadnât told her about the Fates, and I wasnât sure why. Perhaps it was something to do with the gaping ravine sheâd cleaved in my chest the last time sheâd betrayed my trust. Placing the quill back in its pot, I raised my hands above my head in a stretch. It was hard to pretend that everything was continuing as normal when I knew a secret tunnel linked Hehven and Helle and my brother was going to unite our people by marrying the Chaos Crown Princess. A groan tore from my lips, loud in the empty room.
My gaze flicked periodically to the door, waiting for Amare to appear. I hadnât seen her since Iâd arrived, and nerves crumpled my insides. We were yet to finish our conversation and I wanted desperately for her to confirm what I already knew in my gut: there was something wrong with the Fates.
When the door flew open, I jumped, almost knocking over the pot of ink, but it wasnât Amare.
âDash?â I questioned, pressing a hand to my heart. âYou almost scared the feathers off me.â
He didnât respond, instead closing the door behind him, before beginning a determined path across the room. I folded my arms across my chest and watched, bemused, as the furrow between his brows grew deeper with each lap.
âBrother?â I asked. âAre you well?â
Dashuri grumbled something unintelligible, and I pushed back my chair with a sigh, before placing myself in his path, halting his stride.
I reached out and put my hand on his shoulder, lowering my head slightly so I could look him in the eyes. âDash. Whatâs wrong?â
He looked at me then, his eyes darting between mine, wilder than Iâd ever seen them. âI understand.â
âUnderstand what?â
He turned, my hand slipping from his shoulder. âHow you felt.â
âWords, Dash,â I urged, trying to keep the frustration from my voice. âI need words.â
His shoulders slumped, his ivory feathers brushing the floor. âI was so hard on you when you reacted badly to your betrothal.â
I stiffened. âYes. You were.â
âI thought you ungrateful,â he continued, turning to face me once more. âCaitland is a beautiful, intelligent Cupid, and I couldnât see past the fact that you should have thought yourself fortunate to have such an auspicious match made for you.â
âI never said that Caitland wasnât a good match,â I said carefully. âShe just wasnât a good match for me.â
Dash shook his head. âThatâs what I mean. Iâve always known Iâd have to make a choice at some point in the future, but the crown came first.
