Chapter

Seventeen

I was pretty convinced Aiden’s brother was still alive in this timeline. After all, I’d just seen his name featured in the shining trophy case of a school he most definitely had not attended.

But that was impossible.

You still think some things are impossible? My brain snickered at me like I was slow and stupid. Look around you.

I was reeling from the shock of it when we got to Aiden’s truck and climbed inside, just barely missing the rain that had started falling again. Aiden was too busy laughing over our dramatic exit to notice my silence at first. He peeled out of the parking lot before we could see if everyone was following protocol and evacuating the school.

“See, now you’re getting the hang of truth or dare,” he said as he sped down the road, his windshield wipers sliding noisily across the rain-spattered window. “What does that say about you and me if running out an emergency exit door is that intense for us?” He slumped in his seat and shook his head, bemused, his gaze flicking over to mine when I didn’t answer. “You okay? Did the game already break you? You look like you’ve seen a ghost.”

I have, I wanted to say. But I didn’t. I couldn’t. I was so caught off guard, I didn’t know how to bring up the subject without sounding totally tactless. I mean, what if I brought it up and it was just another Wes Mitchell that happened to live in Pearson?

Aiden never mentioned his brother; obviously, it was an off-limits subject. A sharp pain needled its way through me as I thought about Rose and the possibility of me losing her—

Nope. I couldn’t even finish that thought.

So I kept my mouth shut. Especially since Aiden was smiling at me with that wide easy grin of his as if he was happy to be ditching school with me. I was both surprised and irritated by how much I liked the thought of that. And for the briefest moment, we weren’t fighting. Like maybe our being here in this strange place had caused us to lay down our weapons and draw up a temporary ceasefire.

“Where are we going?” I asked, changing the subject.

“I have a few ideas,” he said, refusing to explain further.

Forget what I said about liking this temporary truce—he was starting to annoy me. But no matter how much I bugged him about where we were going, no matter how many questions I threw at him, he dodged them all. “You need to live a little,” was all he said.

“What, like you’re some wild child out on a bender for life? You’re nearly as uptight as me.”

“Maybe at home. But not here. I don’t need to be.”

“Why?”

“It’s not your turn to ask me a question.”

“Fine, then go ahead and ask me. Truth or dare.”

“Nope, I’m saving mine for when we arrive at our destination.”

Five minutes later, we pulled into the parking lot of Applebee’s; Pearson’s finest dining establishment.

“Seriously? Applebee’s?” I asked, totally unimpressed with his big surprise.
