Chapter Ten

Off Script

N ow that he’d finally experienced the release that his body had so desperately needed, another bodily need supplanted it at the top spot. Water. Refreshment. He needed more than a bottle’s worth, too.

“We could go get you something to drink,” Angela said, glancing at Samantha. Clara, though she was taking her sweet time, was in the process of freeing him from his handcuffs.

“I’m pretty sure some is waiting up ahead,” Samantha said. “Remember?”

Briefly, Angela didn’t seem to, though a flash of recollection brightened her seafoam eyes. “You’re right.” She turned back to him. “Just a little longer, and you can hydrate plenty. If you don’t think you can hold out, we can still go get you something.”

“Kind of just depends on how much longer is ‘a little longer,’” he said.

“You’ll be there soon. It’s the next real trial.” An eye roll followed.

“Angela!” Samantha said, bumping her elbow into her captain’s side.

“Oh. Um, forget you heard that, Jason.”

He certainly would not. Once Clara finally released his wrists, he rubbed them while considering the information that Angela had accidentally dropped onto his lap. The next “real” trial. Meaning there was some sort of trick coming up?

“Well, you should get moving forward, anyway,” the voluptuous woman said, hastily working to distract him. “You’ve still got a bit more to go.”

In tandem, she and Samantha stood, each of them offering him a hand up from the chair. After accepting their offer, he pulled them both into his body. As their breasts squashed against him, he grinned and shut his eyes.

“Angela’s on my left, and Samantha’s on my right.”

“Wow, so impressive,” Samantha snorted.

He tossed a grin to all three women as he departed, opening the second-to-last door that he would open while still within Christine’s maze. He left them the handcuffs, but the crimson blindfold remained around his neck. All three had seemed intrigued enough by his request to hold onto it to consent. While he didn’t have a specific plan in mind on how to use it just yet, he knew he’d come up with something when the time was right.

Right. Right. Right.

That was precisely the experience that his path provided him shortly thereafter. In the dark confines of a narrow hallway, he’d reached a fork in his way. Choosing to head right, he’d come to another. Going right again, he’d been forced to make that third right, only to find himself staring at a black wall. He was in a maze. An actual maze.

A labyrinth, he corrected himself, rolling his eyes.

He wondered if this was what Angela had meant while he backtracked to the second fork in the dimly lit maze. He found no comfort there, as both paths led him to dead ends, which he checked with his hand, realizing that maybe Christine had put up a false wall or some other deception designed to frustrate him. He even returned to the first dead end and checked it, too.

Three duds later, he returned to the original fork and chose the left path.
