defuse the bomb

Defuse—“to take out or remove the fuse from a bomb or explosive device,” or “to render a situation less dangerous,” as in “Obama defused the tense situation in Iran.”

diffuse

Diffuse—“to thin out or spread out,” as in “The heat from the morning sun had diffused throughout the valley by noon, raising the temperature to unbearable levels.”

Dilemma

Dilemma—a circumstance where a person is put into a situation and must decide between what seem to be equally unfavorable choices. For example, in several old movies and comics, the protagonist was forced into a dilemma. He had to decide who would die—his wife or his daughter (or a similar choice).

Note: In the traditional sense of the definition it meant a problem of choices between two alternatives, but if you look at definition two from the American Heritage Dictionary, you will notice it refers to a decision that defies a satisfactory solution. That definition seems to be gaining support from both the public and from professional linguists.
