CHAPTER TEN

Trouble at Home

More felidors are dying on Kapteyn b. Elders and offspring alike are becoming infected at alarmingly high rates. Mortality rates continue to skyrocket. Self-isolation is being enforced but somehow the virus is still spreading and attacking cats of all ages.

Zahra and Orion have only one agenda, and it’s to save themselves. Thus far, they have not contracted the deadly virus. Elder felidors are dismayed and angry. Why are loyal subjects dying on a daily basis, yet Zahra and Orion remain unscathed? Surely, the universal cat gods will step in before it’s too late.

The Centauri Class has dwindled down to only eight surviving members. The hyperbaric ward has been breached by the rogue virus, mercilessly taking the lives of the other graduates.

Blood transfusions containing antibodies extracted from the human samples Euronymous returned with were not successful in stemming the infection. Felidor researchers are baffled and dismayed. They are losing the battle and succumbing quickly to the virus. Merging with felines won’t help if a cure can’t be achieved first.

Within the largest research hyperbaric chamber, the orphan trio and the four friends continue with trial attempts to strengthen the antibodies. They work in separate groups and speak in hushed tones.

“Donovan is up to something on planet Earth,” Euronymous hisses her disapproval to her cohorts. “I just don’t know what.”

“Zahra has warned Donovan about trying to pull a fast one. I overheard him speaking with Orion this morning that he will not tolerate insubordination,” Mantus says as he scratches behind his one ear furiously. He looks at Loki who nods his head in agreement, like he always does.

Euronymous points toward Cassini as he enters the chamber and walks over to a lab station where Xanadu, Iris, Vinca, and Artema are intently studying various blood samples that have been drawn from sick felidors. Super electron microscopes display slides on screens floating in the air in front of them. They are doing their best to determine why antibodies disappear after being administered to recipients via vaccines or transfusions. Thus far, they have been unable to figure it out.

“I want you all to know that your efforts have not gone unnoticed,” Cassini addresses them quietly as he makes contact with the touch screen to pull up various reports. Before being appointed to the Exploratory Life Council, he was the head researcher of the Particle Kinesis Project which developed the interstellar space travel system. He is highly respected for his scientific brilliance. Felidors know he only has their best interests in mind.

“Zahra and Orion would punish me if they heard me talking to you, but my gut feeling tells me they really don’t care about any of us.” Cassini’s voice is barely more than a whisper. “They have excluded me from their meetings for the last two orbit periods, and I am tired of it. I can only hope my temporary immunity will protect me for a little while longer. I want you all to know that you can trust me.”

The other four cats continue to study samples, but their ears perk up to catch every word Cassini is saying.
