“What was your favourite part of Ostraka?” Alora asked as she and Bodhi veered off the main road toward the clearing where her birthday party was being held. She spent the day trying to forget that Ryker was in prison, that he wasn’t here with her as he always was for their birthday.

“You,” Bodhi said, sliding his hand to hers and bringing it to his chest.

They stopped treading through the tall grass, facing each other as the last licks of daylight slid behind the horizon. “Do you think it’s a good idea…us?” she asked, her chin dipping.

Bodhi curled his fingers below her chin, tilting it up as he ran his thumb along her jaw. “No,” he sighed. “But it feels like lightning in my veins when we touch, and I smile when you’re in the room. In two thousand years, I’ve never found anyone like you and I have no intention of letting the threat of death keep me from you.” He brought his lips to hers, a kiss as soft as a flower petal that melted her bones.

Stetel cleared her throat. Alora and Bodhi turned in unison. “Please don’t punch me,” she said, clasping her shimmering blue hands against her stomach.

“Never you, Stetel,” Bodhi said.

She flashed him a sharp-toothed smile. “Everyone’s waiting for you, Alora.”

The fae of Ostraka had baked and cooked, rolled casques of every liquor and wine imaginable to the field, decorated with colourful balls of yarn strung from the trees. Wax torches were buried into the ground and rippled smoke into the fading light.

Then the bonfire was lit.

Pixies never could resist fire and the need to have roaring flames on every occasion. Alora used to love them, the warmth and excitement that the tall flames brought. Since the palace burned around her, nearly trapping her in a tomb of fire and stone, she hated the flames. Twisting columns of red and orange made her heart race, sweat beaded along her brow as bile splashed in her stomach.

“Come with me,” Bodhi said into her ear over the excited shouts and boisterous music. He led her away from the flames, from the noise, and the fae that had gathered.

The pond that they'd had lunch beside was still, the emerging moonlight casting a wide glow over the glassy water. Bodhi brought her to an ancient olive tree, the trunk wider than his back and half his wingspan. He sat against it, grasping Alora’s waist and guiding her down between his legs, resting her back against his hard chest.

“Were you afraid?” he asked, there was no judgement in his voice, only a soft question.

“Yes. I almost died in a fire,” she said, as he wrapped his arms around her. “How did you know I was scared?”

“I could feel it. My heart was racing, panic was sliding up my spine, but in my mind, I wasn’t scared.” Bodhi smoothed his palms over her arms, chasing away the tremble that had settled there.

“You felt me? That’s strange. I’ve never felt you,” she said, grasping his wrists, tugging them around her waist.
