One second, I’m staring down at Tommy sprawled out in the snow dusted-grass, ready to put a bullet between his eyes. In the next, it’s Evie’s gorgeously horrified expression I’m looking at. The barrel of my gun directly in her face.

Panic seizes me as my finger slips from that hairpin trigger, and I lower the gun to my side, fully aware of how close I came to accidentally shooting her.

“Are you insane?!” My shout is far harsher than I expected, but anger tears through me at her foolishness. Stupid fucking girl.

Her eyes follow the gun, shock cutting across her features as the realization of what she’s done appears to register. She stands there, staring at the gun for what feels like an eternity before her gaze switches back to mine, wide eyes telling me of her fear.

“You can’t kill him, Eoin.” Her voice is so soft, with a tremble on the words that’s shaky just like her entire body as she tugs her robe tighter around her form against the cold breeze.

She can’t be fucking serious.

“You’re protecting him now?” I demand, taking a step towards her and tilting my head.

“No.” She says it so firmly, with a stomp of her foot, and aggressively points a finger at me. “I’m protecting you.”

“I don’t need you protecting anyone, Evelyn. Especially me.” My gaze hardens. “And if you’d take a bullet for him, we have a big goddamn problem.”

“You can’t kill him.”

“Evelyn, get inside.”

“Don’t do it.” She’s so insistent.

While I know why, I struggle to tamper down the part of me that wants him erased from the damn planet. It would be the easy way for him to go and not the ideal variation of his death I’ve been plotting, but it would do. “Get. Inside.”

“Eoin.”

“Get. Inside. Now!” I practically roar the words at her. And immediately regret it.

She shrinks back from me and breaks my heart at the same time. But as soon as the shock of my tone fades, anger flashes through her gaze. “He’s not worth it.” She says it so quietly I barely hear her, but the words creep inside me and settle in that place where I’d do anything for her. Even murder a cop in cold blood in her front yard like an absolute heathen.

I nod, just once. And she nods back in silent understanding.

“Go inside. I’ll be there in a few minutes.”

She doesn’t move right away, but she also doesn’t give Tommy a moment of her attention. Instead, her emerald gaze remains fixated on me, forcing an oath from my lips.

I reach out to caress her cheek, unable to keep myself from touching her. “I promise.”

She leans into my hand, and I palm the side of her face, eye contact never faltering.

“Thank you,” she murmurs as a small, sad sort of smile graces her lips just before she kisses my palm and walks away, leaving me standing in the front yard with a dazed, half-awake Tommy and my brothers at my back.

The pair have stayed back,
