In 2002, when Michelle Kwan won Olympic gold, she was wearing a skating costume designed by Vera. As Olivia Barker of USA Today wrote, “A former Olympic skating hopeful herself, Wang . . . revolutionized skating costumes much in the way she transformed bridal gowns. She took ice attire from the spangly get-ups that looked like they had leaped off a circus trapeze to elegant, subtle dresses that complement, rather than overwhelm, a skater’s artistry”4

2002 Olympics

In 2002, Vera Wang wrote a series of articles for the fashion publication Women's Wear Daily on figure skating at the Winter Olympics that year in Salt Lake City, Utah. Although Wang liked the dress she had designed for Kwan, she also described the costume worn by Olympic contender Sarah Hughes and the pale blue dress worn by Sasha Cohen. Kwan's dress was dark purple with multicolored crystal flowers. However, Vera also did not hesitate to point out that some of the costumes she saw at the Olympics were not well designed for competitive skating because they interfered with the performance of the skaters.
