Living your life so that you feel good about who you are is often tough to do. There are daily pressures from school, home life, and friends, and these are often overwhelming. It’s important to remember that you are at your best when you are able to listen to your inner voice and follow your passions.

Mary Kim Titla is an example of someone who strives for balance in all aspects of her life. She was born on November 24, 1960, in San Carlos, Arizona, home to the San Carlos Apache Tribe. She is the eldest of the five children born to Charlotte and Phillip Titla, including her siblings Millie, Phillip Darrell, Phillip Jr., and Gussie.

Mary Kim’s paternal grandparents lived with the family, and they helped to keep an eye on their grandchildren while Phillip and Charlotte were away at work. There was a lot to keep the children busy at home, including playing with the chickens, dogs, and horses. Their house may have been small, and they lived without indoor plumbing and electricity for many years, but Mary Kim didn’t feel like they were lacking anything. Theirs was a loving home filled with messages of hope and a belief that education would be their key to future successes.
