Two hours later Dane returned with an exhausted Jasper and Stoner in tow.

“Well that was quick,” said Jules. She had expected the police to cling onto them with both hands.

“The Vagabonds wouldn’t say who attacked their clubhouse,” said Dane as the three men slumped into the vacant chairs at her table.

“Well it seems they’ve finally learnt their lesson. I’ll bet Williams was clinging onto your leg, crying as you left the station,” she said, addressing Jasper.

“He wasn’t too happy,” he muttered.

Jules realised she was pleased they’d been released. She could just imagine the pair of them, Stoner especially, giving up information about the club just to save their own hides, despite their rule about not grassing to the police. “So they’ve got nothing?”

All three men nodded.

“Good. Job done then. The Vagabonds are no more and we are in the clear.”

“Williams will be back,” said Dane. “He’s determined to find out why Azrael’s pulled a vanishing act.”

When his suspicious gaze bored into her she shrugged, annoying him even more. “Who gives a shit? The dick’s gone and he’s never coming back.”

“And if he turns up dead guess where will be the police’s first port of call?”

“Let them come,” said Jules. “We’re nothing to do with it. Everything will be fine as long as everyone keeps their shit together and their mouths shut.”

“Where are you going?” said Jasper when she got to her feet.

“I’ve got a lead on one of the contracts I’m working on.”

“But I’ve just been let out of prison.”

“You were in for nine hours. It’s not like you’ve just finished a ten year stretch.” She rolled her eyes when he appeared hurt. “Look, it’s important but it won’t take me long. I’ll be back later and we can have a big piss up to celebrate.”

Jasper smiled and clapped his hands together. “Sounds fucking fantastic. In the meantime, I’ll grab a shower and some kip.”

“Good idea,” she said, stalking out of the club.

Dane wanted to follow her, desperate to know whether her mysterious errand was anything to do with Chantelle but that would look suspicious so he stayed put. Besides, he wanted to keep an eye on things at the clubhouse, not that Jasper and Stoner looked like they could get up to much, both were struggling to keep their eyes open.
