Chapter 15

The next morning I woke up feeling like I had a hangover even though I didn’t drink anything the night before. It was likely a combination of stress and being overly tired from so much running around.

I got up and put on some strong coffee before stepping into a steamy shower. By the time I got out I felt better, taking some ibuprofen with my first cup of coffee to erase the remains of my funk. I was still in my bathrobe when my cell phone rang. It was Craig.

“I’m on my way over. I’ll be there in five.”

I hung up. Great, he was in a good mood. I went into my bedroom and made the bed, then got dressed in jeans and a T-shirt. By the time I was done, he was at the door.

“What happened to the front of your house?”

“Random act of violence. I’m fine. The guy is coming to fix the window this morning. Someone is coming to look at the tree this week to see if it can be salvaged. No biggie.”

He looked at me skeptically. “Random act of violence? I don’t buy it.”

It had been worth a try. I sighed. “I don’t know who did it but I have an idea why. Sit down,” I said, indicating the couch. “Watch out for glass. I think I got everything but you never know. Do you want some coffee?”

“Sure. Black.”

I got the coffee and brought it back in the living room, curling up on an overstuffed chair. He sipped the coffee and looked at me expectantly.

“I’ve been asking questions about a case Alex was working on when he died.”

“What? Why would you be doing something like that? You’re not still hung up on him not calling in, are you?”

“Would you please just let me talk? Do you want to know or not?”

He huffed and sat back. I told him about finding the files behind the desk and my visits to state police headquarters, to Junior and to the Hollisters. I also explained the trip to the nightclub. Unlike when I’d told the stories to other people previously, I didn’t edit anything out.

“So this is what you’ve been doing,” he said, then looked out the side window to the front yard, “and this is what happened?”

I sat quietly for a minute. “Yeah.”

“I don’t like it.”

“I don’t either.”

“Someone told you to back off. This is serious.”

“I know.” I paused. “Craig, I need to know something. When did Alex give you that letter?”

I watched the blood drain from his face as he realized the implications of my question. “About two months before he died. He came in to check on the will, make sure everything was okay. He gave me the letter and said it was for you but I should read it first if something happened to him. I didn’t think anything of it at the time.”

I nodded. “Can you think of any reason, any reason at all, that those files would have been hidden? Because I’ve racked my brain and I sure can’t.
