Both Abby and I have glazed eyes at dinner, but she manages to keep up a steady stream of chatter to Luke about ordinary things: the weather, his work, the progress of her dresses, her plan to send me to the library with the kids the next afternoon. Which means I’m stuck here for another day, when all I want is to find a way to get hold of my watch and go.

As Robert tells me about the home run he hit during recess, and Catherine chatters about the birthday party she’s going to next week, and Sarah crawls up into my lap, I realize how much I’ll miss them. I wish I could see what becomes of them. That I could just drop in to visit sometimes. But no. Once I get home, I won’t ever leave again.
