CHAPTER 20

Nick

The Zoom call on Saturday looks like the opening to The Brady Bunch. There are nine of us, all on together to strategize about the shareholder lawsuit. I would rather be getting a root canal right now than dealing with this.

Shay sits beside me and takes notes. Between all of us on the call, we own almost eighty percent of PayFriend’s stock. We’re confident that the other stockholders won’t get far, but they could still destroy the overall value of the company in the process. That’s what Villefort wants. He thinks this will ruin me, but it won’t. I’ve made smart investments, and thanks to my time at the beach, I’ve already started the business plan for my next project.

We talk and talk, seemingly in circles sometimes, but with Marci’s leadership, eventually, a plan comes into shape.

“All right,” Marci says. “Before we end our call, I want to make sure we’ve got everything covered. Gemma is going to set up interviews for Mason and Nick. Gray and Jaxson are going to reach out to Erik Page at the Page Fund and see why he’s buying into something that will tank the stock prices. Grantham, you and Jim are almost done with vetting the other companies, and you’ll soon be ready to resubmit the civil case against Villefort. And I’ll check with Walker through official channels on what he’s going to do about the now nine companies Villefort has evidently stolen from. Am I missing anything?”

“Yes,” Grantham says. “When will you be back in San Francisco, Nick?”

“I haven’t even been gone a month. You can’t be missing me that much.”

“No, but it’s easier to do all this with you here.”

I sit silently a moment. “I have a few things to do this week, and then we’ll fly back.”

“Thank you,” Jaxson says. “We miss you.”

The call ends, and I look over at Shay. “I guess we need to go back.”

She nods. “It appears so. Is San Francisco so bad?”

I shake my head. “I used to love it. But now that I can’t do anything without it being a giant production, I don’t.” I let out a big rush of air. “Let Van know, and we can head back after the night we go to Beaufort for dinner. I’m not giving up on showing you where I grew up and having dinner with my family.”

“When do you want to do that?”

Never. I’m not ready to return. “In three months?” I joke. “That’s just wishful thinking.”

“We can do this.” Shay wraps her arms around me before leaving me alone in my office.

I’m so grateful for her. I know she misses Ellen and her mom. I hear her talking to them, and I hate that I’m keeping her from her friends. Olivia never liked it here. She didn’t like how remote it was. She said there wasn’t enough going on, no places to see and be seen. And she also hated the sand. Shay hasn’t complained about anything, but I know she’s not happy.

I pick up my phone and call home.
