He carried me in his arms and blasted off on his scythe-board. It took me by surprise and blew my mask away. In seconds, we soared above the city skyline. All the honeycombs twinkled with festive lights and the queen’s palace sparkled like a blanket of snow in the morning sunlight.

“Woah!” I screamed, clinging to his neck tighter. “We’re so high up!”

“Chill out, Red. I gotcha. You’re not gonna fall off.”

My instincts begged me not to look down, but I did, anyway. The streets and rivers coursed along under my dangling feet. The energy plant workers buzzed about like tiny bees. Hundreds of black dots soared past us in opposite directions. Reapers delivering souls to and from the various realms. Beautiful fireworks boomed in front of us, dazzling me with colors not found on earth.

“It’s so beautiful.”

Ace nodded, standing me up on the scythe blade. “Yup. I wanted to show you a whole new world.”

“You’d better not start breaking into a Disney song,” I said, shooting him an exasperated look. “Or I’ll stuff my glove down your throat.”

“Hey, hey,” he said with palms out. “No need to get violent. I wasn’t gonna do that. Promise.”

“Really?”

He glanced away. “Okay, well…maybe. Fine. You got me. Aladdin’s one of my favorites.”

“You goofball,” I said, gently knocking him on the forehead. “It was a cute idea, though.”

His scythe hovered in place over the city. He took his mask off then sat on the edge and motioned for me to take a seat next to him. I obliged and watched the fireworks. They exploded into skull and scythe shapes, and in silhouettes resembling the queen. The smell of smoke and gunpowder lingered.

I peered into his twinkling eyes. “Ace, I wanted to say thanks again for all you’ve done. That night at the park with the Remnant, searching for Vivi, rescuing us from the werewolves, bringing me here…I’m alive thanks to you.”

“Aw, it’s no biggie,” he said, trying to hide his embarrassment. “Like I said, I’m just ‘Your Friendly Neighborhood ‘Pire-Man.’ With great power comes great responsibility, right? I have that power, and I want to use it to help others.”

“But why? Is there a reason, like something that happened to make you think that way?”

He shrugged. “If you’re implyin’ that some kind of tragic event happened that spurred me to heroism, nope. Just as I told you at school, I’m a Superman guy, not a Batman. It’s just the right thing to do, so I do it.”

“I can respect that.” I kicked my legs as they dangled in the air. “I’ve only ever thought of going that far for Vivi or Papa, but…maybe I should start paying more attention to the people around me.”

“I wholeheartedly endorse that, Red. I’d prefer you not to end up like my bro.”

“Come to think of it, why is he so grumpy and angsty?”

“We have a heavy weight on our shoulders. Our Pops, Kebilos Drepani, is the greatest reaper who’s ever lived. Won more battles and reaped more souls than anyone.
