Ghost Stories

Sophia shivered under the blankets, too terrified to sleep.

The creepy ghost figure staring at her from the trees hadn’t come much closer, but she couldn’t help but notice him following the girls the quarter mile or so from the camp center down the trail to the little cabins as a distinct spectral glow off in the trees. At night, they had only flashlights and two gas lanterns—carried by the scout leaders—to see by. Bad enough darkness made this part of the Girl Scout camp look like the setting for one of those scary movies she couldn’t bear to watch, a real spirit wanted to kill them.

She would have spent most of the night lying there awake, staring at the underside of the top bunk, but couldn’t since she’d pulled the covers completely up over her head. Due to being in an unfamiliar place, she’d have been up most of the night anyway, but having the heck scared out of her by a ghost story—then seeing an actual ghost who looked quite crazy and sinister—made sleep truly impossible.

Learning magic and dealing with supernatural stuff had given her a little confidence. Enough to be stupid and think she could handle going away to summer camp for a week. Not enough to actually do it. Fortunately, Klepto had returned. The kitten curled up in a little donut of fur atop her chest.

Goblins got loose in the house and pranked Sierra and Dad. Klepto dealt with the situation, having called in some reinforcements. Unfortunately, the kitten lost track of Sierra and Dad after they’d gone into Niedermeyer’s yard. Being given a perfect excuse to go home while being too terrified to leave this bed frustrated her to the point of tears. It didn’t make sense to her what interest the goblins had in the crystal. Mr. Anderson loaned it to her to practice with, claiming it came from Tibet or somewhere exotic and held a reserve of spiritual energy. He’d purposefully not told her much about it because her ‘lesson’ involved divining its nature and purpose. She hadn’t yet managed to do it.

Worse, she couldn’t tell the scout leaders or camp counselors she had to rush home to undo some magical calamity. They’d either think she told a childish lie as a weak excuse or that she’d gone nuts. Going home to check on her family made sense. She wouldn’t get in trouble from her parents for it, but she’d have to return to the camp before anyone there noticed her missing.

Of course, going home required her to do two things she couldn’t. One: leave the safety of bed. Two: walk a quarter mile in the woods at night to find a building with a suitable closet. Technically, any door could work. She could try summoning a portal using the bunkhouse—essentially a huge closet—but didn’t know what would happen to any people inside it.
