Chapter 9

ABIGAIL HAD FORGONE the scarf and cross after the first day Sebastian had all but laughed in her face. Even without it, it didn't make her any less on her guard. Every moment she was in his presence was like torture. Could he tell? Could he smell her magical blood beneath the surface of her skin?

Her mother's words from the other day kept haunting her as she went about her work week. Vampires drank blood. They craved a witch's blood above all others for the magical elements that came with it.

One drop of blood that's all it would take to let the cat out of the bag. That or being caught using magic. Abigail had avoided anything that could possibly cut her and it was becoming a tedious task. Opening Sebastian's mail was a feat of its own.

Avoiding her boss was not an option. While he spent most of his time in his office she still had to deliver his papers and interact with him on a daily basis. She was almost certain he could tell there was something off. Abigail just hoped he thought it was about his vampirism and not her heritage.

"Abigail."

She jumped swiveling around in her seat to see a smirking Mandy. "Well aren't we jumpy today. Lost in thought?"

Mandy stood on the other side of Abigail's desk, enveloped in an ice blue tunic dress that matched her eyes. As usual, she had every hair perfectly in place and her skin a flawless masterpiece. Abigail wondered not for the first time if she was also a vampire. There was no way any human could have skin as perfect as Mandy's.

"Sorry," Abigail grumbled, shifting in her seat her thoughts on Mandy's human status causing her hands to sweat.

Frowning down at her, Mandy leaned against the edge of the desk causing Abigail to move back a notch. "What's the matter?"

Her eyes darted to Sebastian's office and then back to Mandy's concerned face. Should she just come out and ask her? What if she got offended?

Luckily, Mandy saved her the trouble and asked, "Is it about Mr. Storm being a…" she lowered her voice down eyes shifting around the office, "…vampire?"

Abigail's eyes widened at her question and she gulped down her nervousness, resisting the urge to rub her sweaty hands on her skirt. "Yes. No. I mean, not really." She shook her head as she tried to get her bearings. "I mean to say, is he, you know…" she gestured around the room.

"The only one?" Mandy finished for her with an understanding look. "Yes," then added on with a shrug, "as far as we know anyways. Mr. Storm is the founder of the company and I'm sure he has friends who have been here since the start as well but if they have the same condition as him they are doing a good job hiding it."

The way that Mandy said Sebastian had a condition was strange to her. Vampirism wasn't a condition it was a curse. One she would never wish on another human being.
