Eversoleâs Knoll
âPlans change, Phil,â Crook said. âPoint is to win.â
Sheridan nodded. âGrates on me, though. If you couldâve swung south, cut off their retreatâ¦â
âHave to get them to retreat first. Old Bricktopâs right. I rode over there, had a look. If I extend his flank with one division and swing the other north of that creek bottomââ
âRed Bud Run,â Sheridan said.
ââthen clear out that artillery and recross, we can turn their flank and set them running like rabbits. I believe itâll do the trick, Phil, I really do.â
Staff men kept their distance, sensing that the generals wanted privacy. Between the hill on which they stood and Winchester, volleys prickled on, but with less fury.
âNot just you, though,â Sheridan said. âYou flank them, George. And Iâll resume the attack across the front. Iâll be damned if a single man in this army wonât do his part.â His face was blotched and hard-set. âWhole dayâs been a piecemeal affair, Iâve made damned-fool mistakes. But Iâm done making them.â He snorted. âWouldâve liked to trap that bastard, though.â
âStill might. Weâll see.â
âCavalry were supposed to do it. Come in on their flank, not play at pony rides.â
âStill might happen. Probably will,â Crook reassured him. âTorbertâs not one to take his ease on a battlefield. Nor are those boys of his. My betâs that weâre going to give Early a whipping he wonât forget. His quiverâs about empty, way I figure.â
âHell, George, hasnât this been a wicked a day?â
âIsnât over.â
âNo.â Sheridan sighed. âIâll miss Davey Russell, though. That sonofabitch.â
Crook nodded, but just said, âIâll get my corps moving.â
Sheridan broke off his foray into sentiment. âHow long until you get up?â
Crook drew out his pocket watch. âThree. I can go in by three. My corpsâs well positioned for the movement.â He neglected to add that heâd brought it up without orders.
âDo it, then,â Sheridan said. âIâll have the Nineteenth Corps go in beside you.â All of his decisiveness had returned. âThen the Sixth Corps, hit them with everything.â
âCavalryâs going to show, you wait and see,â Crook said, still bucking up his old comrade. âWeâll make a pretty rout of this mess.â
âTorbert had damned well better show. After I sang the cavalryâs praises to Grant. Which division of yours makes the flanking move? North of the creek?â
âDuvalâs. Thoburnâs division is leading my column, heâll break off and extend the Ninthteenth Corpsâ flank. Duval will keep on going across the creek, then wheel to the left.â
âDuvalâs brigade commanders? Remind me.â
âHayes and Johnson. Only two brigades.â
âThat enough?â
âTheyâre good men. The best.â
âHayes? The politician? The Ohio man?â
Crook smiled his old-Army smile, a phenomenon as thin as frontier rations. âHeâll do. Waxes philosophical, then fights like a Comanche. Honest, for what thatâs worth nowadays.â
âHonest? Politician?â
âNo man Iâd trust more.â
Sheridan smiled, too. âExcept for present company, you mean?â
Crookâs smile, a mere cut between his lips, hinted at hidden teeth. âExcepting present company, of course.â
Dropping his smile, Sheridan said, âTear their guts out.â
