Eleven

The next couple of days went by slowly for Natalie. She couldn’t get Chelsea’s advice out of her head. Natalie was trying to figure out the best approach. Or maybe honesty was the right one. She should come out and tell Jonathan that she wanted him, but not to be friends with benefits. She had to make it clear that she wanted a relationship that led to a long-term commitment. But what would he say? It was risky and went against her self-protective instinct to walk away.

Jonathan had ample time to come to her and let her know he wanted to rekindle their affair, but he hadn’t. Instead, he’d given her mixed signals, being flirty at Priceless and distant at the Texas Cattleman’s Club. It was hard to read him or know what he wanted.

Rather than a full-on pursuit, she chose instead to go to the Lattimore ranch after receiving an invitation from Barbara Lattimore. Mrs. Lattimore had reviewed H & W Marketing’s proposal and wanted to speak with them. However, this morning Brent had come down with a stomach bug, so Natalie was going solo to the meeting. Natalie didn’t know if she would seek Jonathan out afterward. She would decide once she made it there. Just in case she ran into him, Natalie wore her favorite dress. A geometric-and-chain-print dress with a trumpet sleeve. The belt around her waist helped show off her curvy figure.

An hour later, she pulled her Lexus through the gates of the Lattimore ranch. She’d never been here before. She’d been to the Grandins’ ranch many times with Chelsea. It had been Chelsea’s father who convinced Natalie to try horseback riding. She’d been wary of entrusting her safety to the large animals and certainly hadn’t thought with her weight she could get on one, but Mr. Grandin assured her she was in good hands. And now Natalie considered herself a competent rider. She wouldn’t win any competitions, but she knew how to handle a horse.

She parked her car outside the beautiful two-story home with a brick facade and made her way up the steps to ring the doorbell. Several seconds later, a woman who had Jonathan’s honey-brown complexion and warm smile opened the door to greet her. Barbara had on jeans, a stylish tunic with beading around the V-neck and cowboy boots.

“You must be Natalie,” Barbara Lattimore said.

“I am, and you’re Mrs. Lattimore?”

“The one and only. Please come in.” She motioned Natalie toward a sitting room right off the foyer. “Would you like some sweet tea or lemonade?”

“I would love both if you don’t mind,” Natalie replied. “I love a good Arnold Palmer.”

“Coming right up, and please call me Barbara.”

“Thank you, Barbara.” While Barbara left to fetch the drinks, Natalie moved over to the sitting room’s wood mantel that held several images of the family.

Natalie easily found Jonathan in the family photos. She was admiring them when Barbara returned with a tray carrying a pitcher of iced tea and lemonade and placed it on the coffee table.
