Benefits of Good Information Architecture
Investing the time to develop an effective information architecture results in many benefits:
Usability: Good information architecture ensures that users can find easily and quickly the most frequently used (and most useful) content and features within an experience. It ensures that the most important content is given a higher priority than less important content, which also helps ensure that navigating through the experience makes rational sense to a user. Good information architecture ensures that an experience behaves the way a user expects it to behave. On the flip side, bad information architecture always leads to poor usability.
Efficiency in the UX design process: Defining an effective architecture of information can help separate form from the function, and thereby focus the overall design effort on the areas that matter the most to the user and to the business. It can also help break down a user experience into a series of reusable components, such as wireframes and modules, which can be reused effectively throughout the experience, bringing consistency to the experience and reducing the level of effort required for design.
Cost to maintain the experience: Given that information architecture breaks the experience into reusable components and helps to separate form from function, good IA helps reduce the cost to update the experience by allowing updates to specific reusable components of the system rather than to every page.
Satisfaction: Improving clarity, consistency, and usability of an experience directly leads to how satisfying an experience will be to a user.
