Digital photographic resources
Digital photographic resources are expanding at a phenomenal rate due to public and commercial digitalisation projects and the uploading of old and new personal photos. These photographic resources vary tremendously; there is a huge difference between an image found through Google Images or Flikr, and one found through a digitalised collection produced by a small archive or from a funded database for academic research. Convenience and the excitement of easily locating photos can lead to complacency in how we treat these images, but it is essential that researchers interrogate digital sources critically. You need to ask yourself: is this image genuine? How has it got here? Who took it, when and why? Is it typical or atypical? In the following I discuss key practices that shape digital photographic archives that have implications for how researchers use and interpret the images they find: selectivity; descriptions; search and viewing facilities; presentation. To illustrate my points I use the example of the International Mission Photography Archive (IMPA), which makes available images from Protestant and Catholic missionary collections held at several centres in Europe and North America. The IMPA is a recently created and well-designed digital resource, the result of a project jointly undertaken by the Centre for Religion and Civic Culture and the Digital Archive at the University of Southern California.2
