Julie’s approach ensured that her closest colleague was fully involved in systematic review of practice. There is clear consideration of the need to analyse data later, resulting in them taking a focused approach to diary use and thus avoiding an overload of materials that may not be useful for the research. The danger in being so focused is that other interesting reflections will not find their way into the diary, and there may be less likelihood of reflections related to personal feelings and attitudes related to the issue. To work collaboratively in this way requires a significant amount of trust to allow the openness required for purposeful self and mutual critique.

Teaching assistant Suzie’s project in 2006 provides strong justification for the use of a reflective diary as a tool to improve practice and thus support the analysis of the research data. The extract in Figure 5.8 highlights many important features but most important is that of a vehicle for self-reflection. In this reflective diary, engagement with and interpretation of responses to professional practice were both essential for development of critical reflection. It was a place for expressing opinions, identifying emotions, making contradictory statements and posing challenging questions, and for the development of debate with one’s own and other people’s ideas.
