At midnight Lasgol was woken by a dull, repeated noise. It sounded like a woodpecker pecking at the bark of a tree. He got up and went to the door, thinking that perhaps the noise was coming from outside. No, apparently not. He spun round.

Egil stretched in his bunk. “What’s that noise?”

“I don’t know,” said Lasgol. He was trying to locate the origin of the noise in the darkness.

“Turn on the lamp,” Viggo said from the other bunk. “You’re not going to find it like that, and you’ve already waked us up.” He sounded annoyed.

“Not Gerd,” Egil said. He gestured towards their friend, who was peacefully snoring in the bunk below Viggo’s.

“He wouldn’t wake up even if a party of Red Usik savages broke down the door and attacked him,” Viggo said.

Egil burst out laughing.

Lasgol lit the oil lamp. The sound was getting stronger all the time, a steady tapping. He went around the inside of the small cabin. “Where’s it coming from?”

Egil indicated Lasgol’s trunk. “I think… it’s coming from the trunk…”

“Oh…” said Lasgol. If it was coming from the trunk, he had a pretty good idea of what it must be. The sound grew louder. He picked up his father’s box, and there was no doubt now. The sound was coming from inside: it was the egg.

Viggo came closer to watch. “I bet it’s that weird egg of yours.” he said, Egil followed him.

Lasgol opened the box. A golden flash dazzled them.

Viggo covered his eyes with his arm. “What the hell?”

Lasgol squinted and looked at the egg in the box. The rapid tapping went on. It was coming from inside the egg.

“How weird,” said Lasgol.

There came another sudden flash.

Egil had bent over to get a better view of it. “The egg’s giving out golden flashes at intervals!” he cried.

Viggo stepped back. “Well, I don’t like this at all!”

“Why not?” said Egil. “It’s fascinating!”

“Because that can only mean one thing: magic.”

“So?”

“So? What d’you mean, so? Magic’s very dangerous, or hasn’t anybody told you already, know-it-all?”

“There’s a lot of superstition and exaggeration around this arcane subject.”

“It’s not a “subject”, it’s bloody magic, and magic is bad in itself,” Viggo concluded, and folded his arms across his chest.

Gerd had just woken up. “Magic?” he asked in alarm. “Who said magic?”

“Look,” Viggo said. He indicated the egg in its open box in Lasgol’s hands.

“Oh! That’s magic!” He sat up in his bunk so quickly that he hit his head. “Ouch!” he muttered. He stood up and hid behind Viggo. “Don’t touch it, shut the box! It could kill us all!”

“What do I do?” Lasgol asked Egil.

“Hmm…. we need to analyze what’s happening. It’s obvious that this is an ongoing process. In my humble opinion it might be either a call or a process of birth.”

Lasgol stared at the egg. The tapping went on, and the flashes filled the cabin.

“Well, if it’s calling someone, it’s going to be bad news,” Viggo said. “Magic just brings trouble, massive trouble.”

Lasgol was beginning to feel a curious sensation.
