Mobility and ethnicity
Ethnicity impacts on mobility either through physical or economic differentiation. With the former, different ethnic groups are physically isolated from each other, either by direct or indirect forces. Within developed countries, ethnicity has deeply impacted on mobility in the US, due to the physical separation of black and white people which prevailed until the 1960s, and its impact on the use of transport means. In all developing countries, social and economic differences interact with ethnic differences impacting on mobility characteristics. The most radical case of class and ethnic mobility differences is that of South Africa. As Cameron (1998) has shown, there is a clear difference between the use of transport modes according to ethnic communities in Pretoria; while the use of the car accounted for 6 per cent of daily trips for black people, the corresponding figure for the white community was 84 per cent. This measure was also higher for the other ânon-whiteâ groups â 37 per cent for âcolouredâ people and 75 per cent for Indians.
