The hotel that Georgia was staying at didn’t look like a bad place considering she had stopped there on a whim. The man at the desk was helpful; he seemed appropriately distressed about Caitlin’s story of her runaway sister (slight embellished for sympathy purposes, but still true nonetheless), and easily gave us Georgia’s room number, wishing us luck.

Alright, I could do this. So far, I had taken Georgia on a date, asked her for another one, and even told her every secret I could think of, even if I was forced to by the circumstances. I could easily walk through the door and face whatever Georgia threw at me.

“Ready?” Caitlin asked, raising her hand to knock.

No, I thought.

“Yeah,” my mouth said.

In the end, however, Caitlin didn’t get a chance to knock. The door opened from the inside and Georgia suddenly appeared before us. The circles under her eyes looked slightly darker, but, otherwise, she looked well.

She also looked very startled to see us.

“Caitlin? Andrew?” she asked. “What are you guys doing here?”

Perhaps it was the nerves. But words began tumbled out of me, and I was helpless to stop them.

“You disappeared so we had to track you,” I said, bringing Georgia’s eyes to me. “I tracked your credit card. I hope you aren’t too mad. We just needed to know where you were. Your Mom is frantic, by the way, you should probably call her. I know you’re probably wondering why we tracked you down, but it was because we were worried. And because I needed to tell you how much I love you, and how sorry I am, and that there’ll never be more secrets between us, though I understand if you’re too mad to forgive me this time. But you didn’t hear everything and I think you need to hear everything I had to say before you make a decision… please?”

Everything almost came out as a gush in one breath, barely allowing Caitlin to respond. Not that she looked inclined to; she was standing, rooted to the spot, eyes widened while she took in everything I had just said.

And then, astonishingly, she laughed. A small part of me that had been wound tighter than a string finally relaxed at the sound.

“Alright, I think I got the gist of it,” she said. “You want to talk? Fine, come on in.”

Heartened by the fact that she wasn’t just kicking me out, I stepped past her and sat gingerly on a rickety chair in the corner of the room, next to a tiny table that I think was meant to be a desk.

I wasn’t sure what was going to happen next, but I knew that this was the last chance I would get.
