Keep in mind the following tips:

• Eliminate unnecessary distracting sounds, such as the television or radio.

• Use a lower pitch of voice when speaking to someone with advanced dementia. The brain will hear this tone better and give the individual a better chance of translating the sounds.

• When speaking to someone, face her so she can see your face.

• Speak slowly, clearly and calmly. Shouting at a person can be misinterpreted as anger and can cause an outburst. Chewing food or gum while speaking to someone makes your words even more difficult to understand and may be interpreted as rude.
