An Unsupermommyâs Imperfect Plan
1. Embrace this season of life as one where a clean house isnât all that important.
2. Let hospitality and stewardship motivate your housekeeping, rather than the approval of others.
3. Allow for imperfect spaces to bring humility instead of shame.
4. Before you spend time on household chores, make sure you have spent time connecting with Jesus, for that is your good portion.
Releasing Expectations for Your Free Time
I bet some of you are rolling your eyes at me right now. Free time? Donât have it. Canât even imagine it. My life is all baby, all the time.
Iâve been there. I get that feeling. But donât write off this chapter. We all have stolen moments, pinched between the endless needs of our children and the excessive needs of our homes. They can be hard to identify, because a momâs free time doesnât come in the form of binge watching a new TV show or Saturdays at the mallâbut trust me, the moments are there. Identify those cracks of time and make them moments of rest. In those small spaces you may reignite your passion for a past hobby or create an intentional plan for regaining a social life.
Those little moments can be places of rest and enrichment or missed opportunities. Take control of them and make them work hard as a space to meet your deepest need: more of Jesus.
Iâve never been hobby-crazy. My husband has enough hobbies for the both of us. Iâm a reader, mostly fiction and magazines. If talking were considered a socially acceptable hobby, itâd probably be my top hit. I didnât feel an overwhelming loss of hobby when I had my first baby, because reading pairs itself particularly well with a newborn lifestyle. Middle-of-the-night feedings gave me a justifiable reason to be up at 3 a.m. with my Kindle in hand. For his first six months, my firstborn didnât nap much except in my arms, so I spent a lot of that time reading. Those stolen moments escaping to another world were one of the few things that kept me swimming forward through that messy, teary, overwhelming season.
Shortly before my first baby, I bought my first smartphone. It was such a gift. I was still working a little for our family business at the time, and that phone allowed me to deal with emails during feedings. An app on it let me make all my Christmas purchases right from the comfort of my nursery rocker. I delved into social media friendships via Twitter. Discovering new apps and new possibilities was entertaining, but it became a black hole for my extra time and energy. I soon discovered the best ways to waste my time on my phone.
Eventually, I rarely read during feedings; I spent the time on my phone. Hours of my life simply wasted doing nothing of value. I have a dear friend who prays as she nurses her children. Now that is time well spent! She will not be called to account for her mental processes during those hours.
