Rhys is naturally beautiful, even with all the pain she carries around with her, but right now, she’s breathtaking. Seeing her in this moment makes me want to stay here, in this frame of time, and soak it in. Dirt flies up all around us, her hair blowing in the wind, while her lead foot presses down on the gas pedal, driving us faster and faster after the others. Kade and Cody drive the four-wheelers around us, while we and two others drive the side-by-sides through ditches, ruts, and anything else that looks like we can slide through.

is filthy and carefree when she looks at me, her white smile shining through all the mud on her face. “Hang on!” Then she cuts it to the left to cut off Kade, whom you can hear cussing us.

“I need beer!” Tucker yells. I swear that phrase is their anthem.

Rhys stops dead in our tracks, jolting our bodies forward a bit, to yell back, “Me too? Home base?”

“Deal.”

Rhys looks at me, my arm around the back of her seat. “Please keep all limbs inside the vehicle at all times. I’m not responsible for what happens on a beer run.”

“Bring it, baby,” I taunt, and she grins before tearing through the grass like a bat out of hell.

Reaching what they call home base, which is just a bunch of kegs set up, she throws it in Park and slides out, rushing to Tucker and the liquid gold. The crowd has grown in the hour we’ve been playing out in the field. Kade pulls up and parks, heading toward the beer as well.

When Rhys walks back holding two cups, I throw my hands up. “Looks like you’re double-fisting tonight.”

“You’re not drinking?” Her nose wrinkles with confusion in the cutest way.

“No. I’ll have precious cargo to drive home.” She blushes.

Someone must have brought a Bluetooth speaker because country music is blaring all around us. Everyone is in their own conversations, so I pull Rhys off to the side. Grabbing one cup at a time, I set them down on the ground. “May I have this dance?”

“You may.” Her laugh feeds my smile before her small hand finds mine, and I count the steps out to her in a whisper. One, two...one two… My chin rests on her forehead as our bodies move to the music.

Three songs later, I lift her chin and confess, “You make me feel things I’ve never felt before, Rhys.”

The sparkles in her eyes rival the stars on this clear night. “You make me feel.” Our lips meet with her confession. I know she’s healing, and I hope I can keep her in this safe nook I’ve built around her, because if she leaves, it may just knock me off my feet. Then she won’t be the only one who’s unsteady.

“Can I take you home?” I don’t want this night to end, but I’m ready to get her alone, and not with a crowd a few feet away.

“You can take me to your house.
