NIGHT #2

Gregg wondered if the psychedelic drug was wearing off or just continuing. He would not even have known it was his second night if he had not marked his cage. He worried that maybe he had forgotten a notch, that it was actually night #3, and that he already was so disoriented he might not find his way back. His mind was everything, it was who he was, what he did, all his memories, his personality. He knew what they wanted was to take it from him, they wanted find what it took to break his mind, bend his will, take it and control it. It was terrifying to him. The pain, the torture, the torments were terrible but the insidious grinding pressure on his mind and will and the erosion of both were what was most horrible and the way they were doing it by making him responsible for the pain and suffering of the other prisoner, unbearable.

The cage to his right was empty.

The cage to his left whispered in Vietnamese, “Liem, Liem. My brother, where are you?”

JD was like his brother. Izzy, too. Where were they?

“Open your mouth.”

Gregg did. He gulped. He tried to ask for water for the other caged men but all that emerged was a croak. Then he heard gulping in the cage to his left.

A siren sounded. Strobe lights blasted. Discordant music blared.

Maybe he was already dead, too, and this was Hell.
