CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

Mike Clark

Northern Alabama

It took about ten seconds flat for the looters to separate Mike and Jane from Arlene and Sophie, but the route was clear for Mike to get Jane to the GTO. He could probably get them out of there, but that would most likely mean leaving Arlene and Sophie.

He dropped the groceries, widened his stance, and crouched a little, keeping his hands out in front of him and up, ready to go. Jane stood behind him, not saying anything, but her breathing was loud and fast. With her arm the way it was, she wouldn’t be able to help him, and there were three of them and one of Mike, so unless Arlene was a black belt in some kind of defensive martial arts technique, the fight was going to be overwhelmingly tipped in the other guys’ favor. The only thing going for him was that the looters thought him to be so small of a threat that only one of them faced off with him, the other two circling around Arlene and Sophie.

A glance their way revealed that Arlene was keeping her head. She hadn’t broken down in sobs or tried to run past the men surrounding her. She’d set Sophie on the ground, whispering to remind her to keep her hands safe in her pockets, and she had hers stuffed up inside her rain jacket, still taking as much care against the rain as she could while shuffling around, doing her best to keep herself between Sophie and the attackers as they slowly circled her.

Mike jerked his head back to face the man in front of him, who was moving forward and to the left. If Mike didn’t do something soon, the guy would cut him and Jane off from the car. He did the only thing he could do in that moment, taking the advantage of surprise and launching himself at the man, catching his chin with a right hook and then stepping in closer, throwing more punches.

The man responded by putting his hands up and countering, pushing Mike backward. It was a wrestling match then, and Mike was taller and heavier than the other guy, so he was able to plant himself and stop the backward slide. The man shouted, and in a moment, one of the other men had come over to help, leaving Mike outnumbered. The second man caught one of Mike’s arms and reached for the second one, trying to get them both behind his back. Mike turned around to keep the second arm out of his reach, then twisted the first arm out of his grip, but as fast as he did that, his first opponent grabbed the second arm, and the other guy trapped the first. With both of his arms held in vice grips, it was only a matter of time before Mike would be wrestled to the ground, and once there, he’d be pummeled with punches and kicks, easily beaten into submission or possibly to death.

Arlene screamed, and Mike couldn’t help glancing her way.
