It feels like eternity after.

“It’s the students!!”

Some rescued students wrapped in blankets enter the gym. People run over to them.

“Girls, what class are you in?”

“Where are the rest of your friends?”

“We are from class 1.” The girls answer the parents’ questions one by one, shuddering. “The seaside village people took us to a house and that’s where we are coming from. I think there will be more students arriving soon.”

“Class 1? Do you know where class 2 is? Do you know the teacher Park Mi-na?” Mom asks anxiously.

“The homeroom teacher of class 2?”

“Yes, yes. Have you seen her?”

The girl turns to her friend. “Have you seen any teacher?”

“No, I haven’t seen any.”

Any?

The hairs on Yun-young’s arms spring up stiff.

Mom collapses flat on the ground. A journalist shoves a camera in her face. Dad kneels down and props up her head. Mom shakes her head wildly.

“No! Nooo!” Mom wails. “Find my daughter!”

Everyone around them is in a terrifyingly similar state, clueless—even the administrators and government authorities. They know no more than her family does.

“What is going on out there? They said they were all wearing life jackets!”

“Are you kidding us? Tell us something!”

No matter how much people shriek and curse, the situation fails to change.

“If you flash that at me one more time, I will smash that camera!” A woman jabs her finger at a cameraman. “How entertaining this must be for you! You can’t miss out on this, can you?”

Their most agonizing pain is being broadcast all over the nation for people to watch from the comfort of their couches. Parents yell at the administrators and ask for the exact number of the rescued and why the number keeps changing. Cameras dispersed over the gym shift their focus over the miserable.

A man marches toward one of the authorities, and seizes him by the collar.

A girl grabs a mic. “I clearly see the name of my sister on the list. It does say she was rescued, but my sister is not here! Who on earth made this list?!”

No one answers. The confusion keeps spreading.

“What do you mean, they told you to stay put?” A relative of a rescued student asks his nephew while he is talking to a reporter.

“The announcement kept telling us to stay still. And we did because they said it would be more dangerous if we moved.”

It becomes harder to believe as the student continues, “As the water level rose, we were beside ourselves. We tried to climb on the furniture and pull our friends up. As I managed to get out of the ferry and looked back, I saw many being swept back into the waters.”

Parents flap around in panic. “How could they tell them to stay still?”

“They didn’t rescue us. We swam to them, didn’t we?” The student looks at his friend. “They just pulled us up into the boat. Why didn’t they go to the ferry to rescue anybody?” The conversation among the tearful students who have survived creates indignation in those who hear it. “Power inside the ferry was cut off as it was sinking.
