Tumbleweeds Tavern.

Kat studied the sign that hung crooked on its hinges on the sagging building in front of her.

It was a small, hole-in-the-wall bar on the outskirts of Oklahoma City. A layer of dirt and grime covered the once white siding and windows, which looked like they hadn’t been cleaned in a decade or two.

She glanced down at her low-cut top, tight jeans, and cowgirl boots, then back at Martin, unsure.

He raised a gray brow. “What?”

“What if he recognizes me from the… you know…” She felt her face flush. “The news reports.”

“Could be to your advantage. A rogue cop that can kick ass against twenty gang bangers might make a good Bonnie.” He smirked. “Or Marie.”

“Very funny.”

“Don’t worry. These guys don’t watch the news much, unless it’s about themselves. They’re more likely to watch an episode of Cops or Wheel of Fortune. This one’s probably got his nose stuck in history books.”

She shot her new partner a skeptical look. This was not where she expected her bounty hunting adventure to take her, but a job was a job—one that might get dangerous fast.

She shrugged on her leather jacket and patted the handcuffs in her left pocket for good measure, then readjusted the holster along her waistband, her senses tingling as she strode toward the doorway. “I can do this. It’s just another beat, another perp.”

Kat stepped inside and squinted as her eyes adjusted to the darkened interior. It was early in the day, and only the hard-core drinkers were here. The place stank of stale beer and even staler dreams. Tired tunes blared from the antiquated speaker system. Everything felt old and moldy, forgotten by time.

Out of the corner of her eye, she glimpsed a tall, lean man at the pool table toward the back. He was dressed in a western shirt, jeans, and boots.

Donnie, she thought. He was a pretty boy, all right, with a golden head of hair, big brown eyes, and a generous, drooping mustache to rival Sam Elliot’s. Too bad he was a perp.

Kat glanced about, casually casing the place for escape routes as she stepped toward the bar.

The bartender gazed up from polishing the metal fixtures. “What can I get for you, Miss?”

“Whiskey, straight up,” she said, loud enough for the whole room to hear.

It didn’t take Donnie long to sidle up to her.

“Well, hello little darlin’.” He flashed her a toothy grin.

She looked him up and down, feigning interest while scanning him for weapons. There was a bulge in his pocket and another near his arm.

His smile grew wider. “Lookin’ for somethin’?”

She lifted her shot and downed the contents, then slapped the glass on the bar, trying to ignore the burning in her throat. It had been a long time since she’d done that. Now she remembered why.

“For someone. The Sundance Kid. Ever heard of him?”

He glanced at her, his dark eyes twinkling. “Who’s askin’?”

“Etta Place, from Virginia.”

Donnie’s brows rose at the arranged signal. “What can I do for you?”

“I heard you were looking for a partner.
