Air represents the breath of life and influences your energy, mood, and mental focus. The element of air represents expansiveness and movement. On a physical level, it relates to the quantity and quality of your breathing. The inhale delivers oxygen to the lungs and blood, while the exhale releases carbon dioxide from the tissues of the body. On an energetic level, the inhale brings in life-giving energy known as prana, and the exhale releases the energy of elimination known as apana. The balance of prana and apana in the body determines your energy level, vitality, and overall health and well-being.
The relationship with your breath is the foundation of any yoga practice. First, connect with the breath in your yoga and meditation practice, and then maintain that connection throughout your day. When you feel stressed and overwhelmed, take a deep breath through your nose and exhale through the open mouth. Let it go. When you feel tired and mentally drained, take deep breaths through the nose, expanding the body on the inhale, and lengthening the spine on the exhale.
Some yogis believe that at birth we are given a specific number of breaths, and when we reach that number, we expire. In order to live a long, healthy life, slow down the breath.
