My mind is off to the races. Russian connection? Could they try to point any fingers at me? I start to imagine every scenario possible in my head: was I placed here to solve this case? Am I being set up to take the fall for this, or is it all coincidence? None of those options makes me feel any better.

“Agent Kash! Are you listening?” Stryker directs towards me. I look over to him and realize Stryker and King were arguing.

King’s eyes narrowed on me. “I told you she was trouble. Big surprise, there is an insider working to cover up these cases and we get a brand new agent after all this time. What are the odds?”

King is accusing me of being the agent covering this whole thing up. I’m covering things up, but it’s not this, and I’m sick at the accusation. I would never help anyone traffick anyone, especially children.

Before I can speak up, Stryker goes in on King. “Use your damn head, King! She doesn’t have the authority to cover up these things. We also didn’t seek out this case, it just landed in our laps, and Nat was the one who was insistent on following up on this. Why would someone trying to cover it up have our team look more into it?”

King stands from his seat, pushing his chair back “Fine. She might not be covering this up, but there’s something. I fucking feel it in my gut. She’s hiding something. You need to keep your dicks out of her long enough to realize that, before she takes you all down with her.” With his last words, he glares at me and I freeze under his gaze. King charges out of the room.

Everyone is looking at me, but no one speaks. Stryker tells everyone to leave the room, but asks me to stay behind. This will not turn into another finger fuck. Though the tension relief would be welcomed. BJ is the last out and closes the door quietly behind her.

“Nat, I want you to know that I fully trust you on this team.” Where is he going with this? I feel a “but” coming on. “This team may have been together for a while before you joined, but our strong connection does not mean I’ll allow you to feel like an outsider. What do you want me to do about Agent King?”

I look at him puzzled because I have no idea what answer he’s looking for. “What do you mean what do I want you to do?”

He slides into the chair next to me and turns to face me. Stryker is keeping his composure, because that’s what he’s trained to do, but I can see behind his stormy eyes that he wants to unleash something.

“King and I go way back, but we, I mean these kids, don’t have time for him to sort out his feelings about you. King can become self-destructive when emotions run high.”

Okay, now I’m really confused. King’s feelings for me? It’s hate.
