TEXAS RICE

Though rice as an agricultural product emerged in the United States more than 200 years ago, it found its hold in Southeast Texas in the 1880s. By the turn of the century it was a full-scale industry with more than 230,000 acres planted. In 1904, a particular Japanese seed was imported near Houston, along with a number of Japanese farmers who taught local farmers their methods of farming. Within the first three years, the harvest was nearly double the yield of previously cultivated rice varieties, making the new style of Japanese rice production the keystone for establishing the Gulf Coast rice industry.
