INTO COMBAT

Popularly called “Pickett’s charge” but more accurately known as Pickett’s/Pettigrew’s/Trimble’s charge, Lee’s grand assault was planned for three Confederate divisions, commanded by Maj Gen George Pickett, Brig Gen J. Johnston Pettigrew, and Maj Gen Isaac R. Trimble. Approximately 12,000 men in nine infantry brigades were ordered to advance over open fields for three-fourths of a mile (1,320yd) under heavy Union artillery and musketry fire toward a copse of trees on Cemetery Ridge. In addition, two brigades from Maj Gen Richard H. Anderson’s Division of Hill’s Third Corps, under Brig Gen Cadmus M. Wilcox and Col David Lang (Perry’s Brigade), were to support the Confederate attack on the right flank.
