When Katz drove Storm back to Mont Saint-Michel, the first thing she did was to place the unregistered gun back in the well beneath the spare tire in her trunk. Then she returned to the hotel and checked out as if it were just like any other sunny afternoon. As if she hadn’t been locked up overnight by a monk in the cold, damp Saint Aubert Chapel that hung off the edge of a cliff. As if she hadn’t found a dead body and the missing CVR on a remote islet three kilometers away. As if there’d been no shooting earlier that morning at the disgraced pilot in the getaway hovercraft. As if a monk hadn’t flown a gyroplane from the premises with an American lawyer pointing a gun at his belly.

Storm wondered what had become of Brother Simon. Had he returned to his order, or had he escaped the monastery? She knew one thing. If he had managed to escape, he wouldn’t get far, even with the five hundred Euros and some change he’d stolen from Katz’s kitchen drawer.

She gathered her roller luggage, which now contained the backpack and CVR, and her laptop. After leaving the hotel, she walked across the drawbridge and into the courtyard. Pausing before exiting the mount, she carefully scanned the exterior to make sure no armed men were awaiting her return. When she was satisfied that the coast was clear, she headed to her car.

After securing the CVR in her trunk, Storm glanced at her watch. First, she’d have to stop at a gas station and phone Chris. He wouldn’t be pleased with her request to meet up in the late hours of the night, but it couldn’t be helped. It would take her at least eight hours to get back to Ramstein Air Base. And Storm was going to use those eight hours wisely. She needed to decide which truths to reveal and which to conceal.
