Cassidy took a step closer to the strange man, staying well out of his reach. “I’m Cassidy Kincaide. Who are you?”

“Ian Taylor. My older brother, Curtis, is the leader of the Shadow Coven. I will tell you everything you want to know, but please, save my brother. They’re going to get slaughtered.”

Seth took a half-step to the side to get a better look. Ian appeared to be in his early twenties, with long dark hair and sharp-edged features. His gaze darted around the room, on alert for threats, reminding Seth of a feral cat.

“Can we give him sanctuary?” Maggie asked, standing in the doorway behind Ian, broom in hand and raised to give the man a good thwack if needed.

Cassidy thought for a moment, then nodded. “Actually, I think we can. From magical pursuers, if not human law enforcement. Sorren is part owner of Trifles and Folly, we’re heavily warded, and Sorren has declared the city—and certainly the shop—to be under his protection. So anyone who attacks the store magically isn’t just going to draw the ire of the Alliance. Sorren will consider it an attack on his person and his honor.”

“They’d have to be fuckin’ stupid,” Evan murmured. Seth nodded, agreeing wholeheartedly. Sorren might be on their side, but he was still a scary-as-hell vampire.

Teag stepped up beside Cassidy. “Okay, Ian. How about having a seat at the table and telling us what’s going on?”

Maggie lowered her broom, then went to shut and lock the front door, since it was almost closing time. She popped her head back into the break room. “I thought I’d go over to your house and help Kell get dinner for a crowd. I’ve got a feeling there’s gonna be a gathering.”

Cassidy gave a tired smile and nodded. “Thank you, Maggie. That would be wonderful.”

“Oh, and there are some rough characters out on the front sidewalk. Bet they’re looking for this guy,” Maggie’s normally friendly tone cooled, and her eyes narrowed as she glared at Ian, obviously not ready to forgive him for bursting in so dramatically.

“Please, don’t hand me over to them,” Ian begged. “They followed me here. I might be betraying the Shadow Coven, but I’m not betraying my brother. I don’t want him to get killed.”

“Nobody is handing anyone over,” Cassidy replied. “I know Rowan will want to hear what Ian has to say—and I’m betting that when she shows up, the folks outside will make themselves scarce.”

Seth took the temporary lull as a chance to study their new informant a little more closely. He’d never run into a witch gang before, but they didn’t really fit the look he expected from TV. Nothing about Ian had a criminal vibe. He wore a dark denim jacket over black jeans and fashionable-but-not-overly-expensive sneakers. A few tats peeked from the collar of his T-shirt and the cuffs of his jacket, but that sort of thing wasn’t even edgy these days. Seth sniffed the air, but couldn’t pick up any hint of weed or alcohol—not even regular cigarettes.
