When everyone had assembled in Alexâs study, Philip attempted to impart what he knew of the plot without causing panic. In particular, Jennyâs mother could quickly blow things out of proportion. Before she had a chance to sit, he informed her that Jenny had agreed to be his wife. âWith your permission, of course, Madam. Or may I call you Lady Penelope?â
Abruptly, Mrs. Saxtonâs busy fan fell from her hand to dangle from her wrist. Her face turned an alarming shade of pink. Surely she wasnât about to withhold her blessing.
âOh,â she exclaimed, rushing to curtsey deeply before his father. âYour Grace does my family an enormous honor. Of course Jennifer can marry your son.â
âErâ¦â his father spluttered. âIâ¦er.â
His consternation grew when Jennyâs mother held out her hand so he could assist her to rise.
âThank you, Your Grace,â she murmured, taking his arm. âMay I call you Wentworth since, well, weâll be more or less family.â
If Philip chanced to look at Jenny or the other amused faces surrounding him, heâd be unable to control the laughter bubbling in his throat. Instead, he studied the furniture. âI think we have enough seats for everyone,â he remarked with as much gravity as he could muster.
Deliberately paying no attention to his fatherâthe only person who remained standing like a sentry on guard dutyâhe regained his composure and told them what he knew about Derrick and the deadly plot to commit murder.
âI wish we had more idea of how the conspirators plan to proceed,â he told his audience.
âThe detail assigned to guard the Regent arrives on the morrow,â Alex added. âWe will naturally defer to their expertise. For now, we cannot say a word of this to anyone.â
âI plan to carry on to York right way,â Wentworth said. âIâll inform the racetrack officials of whatâs afoot.â
âSurely you can stay for dinner?â Eliza asked.
Philip thought it for the best when his father politely declined. He accompanied him to the foyer where they shook hands.
âI see you are determined to thwart my wishes,â Wentworth said.
Detecting no malice in the statement, Philip replied, âI predict you will come to love Jenny as much as I do, Papa.â
âYou may be right,â his sire conceded. âYour mother, on the other handâ¦â
After seeing his father off, Philip was glad theyâd parted on reasonably good terms for once.
