When everyone had assembled in Alex’s study, Philip attempted to impart what he knew of the plot without causing panic. In particular, Jenny’s mother could quickly blow things out of proportion. Before she had a chance to sit, he informed her that Jenny had agreed to be his wife. “With your permission, of course, Madam. Or may I call you Lady Penelope?”

Abruptly, Mrs. Saxton’s busy fan fell from her hand to dangle from her wrist. Her face turned an alarming shade of pink. Surely she wasn’t about to withhold her blessing.

“Oh,” she exclaimed, rushing to curtsey deeply before his father. “Your Grace does my family an enormous honor. Of course Jennifer can marry your son.”

“Er…” his father spluttered. “I…er.”

His consternation grew when Jenny’s mother held out her hand so he could assist her to rise.

“Thank you, Your Grace,” she murmured, taking his arm. “May I call you Wentworth since, well, we’ll be more or less family.”

If Philip chanced to look at Jenny or the other amused faces surrounding him, he’d be unable to control the laughter bubbling in his throat. Instead, he studied the furniture. “I think we have enough seats for everyone,” he remarked with as much gravity as he could muster.

Deliberately paying no attention to his father—the only person who remained standing like a sentry on guard duty—he regained his composure and told them what he knew about Derrick and the deadly plot to commit murder.

“I wish we had more idea of how the conspirators plan to proceed,” he told his audience.

“The detail assigned to guard the Regent arrives on the morrow,” Alex added. “We will naturally defer to their expertise. For now, we cannot say a word of this to anyone.”

“I plan to carry on to York right way,” Wentworth said. “I’ll inform the racetrack officials of what’s afoot.”

“Surely you can stay for dinner?” Eliza asked.

Philip thought it for the best when his father politely declined. He accompanied him to the foyer where they shook hands.

“I see you are determined to thwart my wishes,” Wentworth said.

Detecting no malice in the statement, Philip replied, “I predict you will come to love Jenny as much as I do, Papa.”

“You may be right,” his sire conceded. “Your mother, on the other hand…”

After seeing his father off, Philip was glad they’d parted on reasonably good terms for once.
