Cate was running—from what, Gwyn couldn’t tell in the dream. Cate’s face was bleeding and dirty, her hair matted. Gwyn felt like she was watching a movie, although the heat of the afternoon sun baked her as well as Cate.

And then she saw them. On the next hill, plumes of dust were kicked up by vehicles in pursuit. Not military, the trucks had machine guns welded on, making them look like something out of a post-apocalyptic thriller.

“Run, Cate, run!” Gwyn cried.

Cate’s breathing was becoming ragged. Gwyn wanted to reach out and lift the survival gear that clung to her back, its weight obviously slowing her down as the predators pursued her. She could feel Cate’s anxiety and exhaustion in her own bones.

As Cate crested the next ridge, Gwyn struggled to catch her own breath, trying to breathe for her friend. Cate lost her footing, which sent her sprawling down the hill. She rolled over and spat dirt and grit out of her mouth. Gwyn felt pain as Cate rubbed her own ankle. Oh, God, was she a wounded animal now?

Cate glanced behind her as the first vehicle rolled up. Men were unloading weapons. “Run, Cate!” Gwyn screamed, louder this time.

Someone was touching her. She shook him off. It was one of the pursuers. “No, leave me alone!” she cried. “Cate, run!”

“Gwyn, are you okay?”

She opened her eyes and sat up. She blinked. “Oh, my God, Cate. Are you okay?”

“You scared the crap out of me. I was dead asleep and you started calling out.”

Gwyn glanced around at the safety of their stateroom. “Sorry. Must have been a bad dream. I didn't mean to wake you.”

“You called me by name. Were you dreaming about me?”

Gwyn ran her fingers through her hair. Rubbed her face. “I was trying to warn you. You were escaping from someone and running through some wild land.”

“Escaping from who?”

“I don’t know. I sensed there were some really bad guys.” Her heart continued to pound. The dream had been so real. “Sorry, it’s probably nothing. What time is it?”

“0500.”

Gwyn exhaled heavily, then huffed out a little laugh to cover her fear. “I just got off the balls-to-four watch. I think I’m overly tired and not making sense. Sorry again for waking you.”

“No biggie. Glad you woke up before the bad guys got me, though.”

The women had a nervous laugh over that, but Gwyn saw nothing funny about it. Cate climbed into her rack for another hour of sleep.

Gwyn’s heart raced. The dream had been so real. Maybe it was because she’d been overworked ever since they’d passed through the choke point at the Straits of Bab el-Mandab, taking them from the Red Sea into the Indian Ocean. Now off the coast of Somalia, she’d been putting in long hours on duty for close to a week. No question she was mentally shot, but was her subconscious trying to tell her something? Was she exhibiting the powers her mum had possessed for years: dreaming about things that eventually happened
