Ben sat looking out on the field behind the barn, resting on the threshold of the oversized door that faced it. Normally this rear door was kept closed, but he’d opened it wide enough for the little foxes to get to the back field as often as they chose. Since this door was set well above the ground, the proper height to access the barn from the bed of a wagon, the little kits were required to jump up almost three feet in order to enter. But this was no longer a difficult task for them. Their legs had grown into tight little springs, launching them easily up from the dirt and through the open doorway. For a long time, Ben sat and watched them play. They kept a wary eye on his movements but seemed willing to allow his proximity.

He’d promised himself that he wouldn’t name the kits. That pledge was rather easy to keep while Freddie was the one caring for them. But now that they were Ben’s responsibility, his will was faltering. He found himself whispering things like, “Keep it up, Sideburns. Little Bitey Boy is goin’ ta get ya.” Then immediately he wished he’d made no such distinctions.

He wondered if the mountain lion had been tracked and shot yet. It was Friday morning, and there’d been no word by telephone. Walter had mentioned that their intention was to spend a second day hunting, if need be.

The whole idea of it made Ben rather sick to his stomach. He’d seen a photograph of a mountain lion and despised the idea of killing one, and yet, it could not be allowed to harm the children. Life’s got a way’a givin’ us no good choices. Just loathsome ones.

Chewing on the corner of a fingernail, Ben spat the broken piece into the dust. The sudden sound made the little foxes react in unison, dropping their bellies to the ground, freezing in place but ready to flee. Their synchronized movements were elegant and precise. Ben smiled and held himself in check again so that they were soon back at their play.

His thoughts returned to his previous musings, hoping the other men would not bring the big cat’s body back with them as some sort of trophy. He’d like nothing less than to be required to look at it. And he would never allow Janie to be subjected to such a sight.

His family came to mind next. They were settled now in Denholm, Dada having confirmed arrangements with the local smithy to share his workshop. And Ben had been introduced to Lloyd Pender—had even paid a visit to the man’s farm. Not only did Lloyd offer a comfortable home for Jane, but many members of the Pender family lived in the area as well—providing a network of resources and support. There was no doubt that Ben’s sister would be well cared for from now on. In fact, she and Lloyd’s family were already as thick as thieves. Who wouldn’t love her though? Me priceless Jane.
