We stand in our respective corners. I’m so excited to be here, in a real ring; it’s hard to settle. I feel the weight of curious eyes on us, but don’t dare look away from my opponent, knowing full well he’ll take advantage of my lapse if I do.

He advances, all power and purpose. My heart pounds, anticipation making it harder to breathe. God, it’s such a rush.

Either I’m getting better or he’s getting worse at focusing. I see his eyes flick to my lips and widen in surprise when I use the ropes to launch a high-flying move.

Right away, I can tell my aim is off. In a last-ditch effort, I extend my arm, hitting him in the upper chest. The force of the slap takes us both down to the springy floor. Fuck, that hurt. I want to rub the burn on my forearm. Instead, I bounce up, ready for his retaliation, only to find him still on the ground staring at me in awe.

“You fucking clotheslined me.”

“Is that good?”

Laughter rolls through the gym.

“Yeah, it’s good. Even if you didn’t mean to, it hurt like hell.”
