Detached youth work is useful because youth workers get to experience firsthand the social environment experienced by young people. It can also help youth workers appreciate the strengths and constraints within the community and perhaps make contact with young people who are not engaged with other services. On the streets, relationships can perhaps more genuinely develop on young people’s terms as they have the upper hand.
