Black has gained a further pawn and simultaneously protected everything. He will just have to avoid a few desperate traps set by White in the throes of death.

39.Qb8 Rh6

A cold-blooded move. White doesn’t really have any attacking chances here.

40.Rd5

40.Qc7+ Bd7 is nothing. After 40.Na5 Black plays 40...Qc5 41.Nb7 Qb6 and everything is protected.

The bishop turns out to be a good defender here too.

White threatens Nc5, but Giri isn’t about to let that happen.

Black must also have been wondering whether 41.Nc5!? could be dangerous for him immediately.

A) 41...dxc5? 42.Qxe5+ Be6 [42...Kf8 43.Rxd7 Kg8 44.Qe8+ Kh7 45.Qxf7 is about equal.] 43.Qc7+ Kf6 44.Qf4+ Kg6 45.Qe4+ is a repetition of moves.

B) 41...Qg4! Black threatens ... Qc4+ (gaining material) and also protects the d7-bishop, nipping White’s attacking chances firmly in the bud.
