“All’s well that ends well,” Opal told David Crowman. Normally, she wouldn’t have bothered to call, but she felt especially proud of herself tonight and she wanted to reinforce her power and expertise so Crowman better would understand how inferior he was; they all were.

“Meaning?” Crowman asked.

Where does Sean get the patience to deal with such bureaucrats? She gave thanks that there was nothing in the form of an organization for her and her kind. All that bound them was instinctive. No rules had to be adjusted or new ones created. There was no voting, no dictating. They were all leaders and they were all equal citizens of their own kind.

What other form of life beside mortals needed laws passed and evaluated. Do bees have a supreme court? Do they change their behavior after a raucous political argument?

In a way her disdain for humanity was helpful. She never suffered from a single pang of conscience. She was as free of guilt as a human being enjoying a succulent piece of Chateaubriand.

“Ugarte’s no longer a threat. I’ll be on my way to carry out the mission tomorrow.”

“Oh. Good. Thank you. Is there anything …”

“If you have the opportunity, you can tell Sean all is well. There’s nothing more for you to do or say,” she said in the tone of someone giving him permission to die and then she hung up.

The following morning she was off on her private jet to Washington, D.C. Although she wouldn’t sleep overnight, she had arranged a suite at the Watergate. As soon as they arrived, she took a nap while Mary arranged her things.

Her target was supposed to be at this dance club frequented by Middle Eastern diplomats, although the music and the food were certainly not Middle Eastern, and the women who were brought there or went there on their own were nowhere as inhibited or intimidated as they were in the countries from which many of the diplomats came. They were like communists or anti-Americans who secretly enjoyed American products, movies, books and foods. Their positions enabled them to get away from the restrictions they imposed on their fellow citizens. What hypocrites, Opal thought, but then again, when and where had she not experienced hypocrisy? It was as natural to mere mortals as was drinking water, she thought.

When she prepared herself later in the day, she chose one of her sexiest dresses, a curve-sculpting bandage fabric and bustier design. The hem flounces created a sexy mermaid look. She wore her hair down with only a pair of diamond drip earrings. No necklace brought more attention to her bare shoulders and low top with almost half of her breasts exposed.

Of course, her fame gave her entry to any place anytime, even the most restricted clubs. These days because of her television work and the magazine spreads and covers, someone in authority almost always recognized her. Most were surprised and delighted she had decided to go to their places. It usually helped her get the attention of whomever had been designated the target.
