Rod walked over to the guest house where Director Spates had stayed during his visit. From the window view in the one-level cottage he watched Helene pace. “You really blew it, man,” he said aloud. “If you had just left well enough alone, she wouldn’t be mad at you right now.” He paced, wishing the conversation had not taken a wrong turn, but understood it was necessary to try to instigate some dialogue. He didn’t know how much longer he could keep up the charade and the distance from her. He loved her, and she needed to know.

Rod considered her words. He couldn’t understand her reluctance to become involved. Granted, he’d had a stable family life and couldn’t quite grasp not having and being loved, but Helene was an adult now.

He looked again up at the window. He didn’t want to leave her alone tonight. He didn’t want them to go to bed angry with each other, a rule he learned from his parents and had not forgotten. He couldn’t leave it bad between them anyway. Something always pulled him to her, no matter how crazy and frustrated she made him feel he had to be near to her. You need to figure out a way to help her.

She needed to forgive herself and her family so she could move on. He thought, maybe selfishly, the sooner she managed to work through her family issues, the faster he could begin to love her the way he wanted to. The way she should be loved—with his whole heart and soul.

To his mind, she deserved to be happy. More important, they deserved to be happy together.
