Chapter 7

Natalie hadn’t thought much past going with him to his room and she hadn’t really prepared to stay the entire night with him.

Plus, as he looked at her so seriously, she knew that what he really wanted was for her to stay with him and not just for the night.

The little voice inside her head asked, “Would that be so bad? Chase is a hard-working, intelligent, funny and sexy man and most women would jump at the chance to have a man like that in their lives.”

Only he’d also become too driven and too serious, she reminded the annoying voice.

“Nat?” he pressed at her prolonged silence.

“I’ll stay,” she said despite her doubts because in the short time they’d spent together, he’d shown her that he was trying to find the man he’d once been and recapture what it was that had brought them together.

Besides great sex.

Passion had never been a problem between them until the very end when he’d been either too tired or too busy to share that part of himself with her.

He finally slipped out of her and together they drew back the bedspread and eased beneath the soft sheets. Meeting in the middle of the bed, they faced each other and she pillowed her head on his arm and twined her legs with his. He flung his other arm over her waist to keep her close and she laid her hand on his chest, right over his heart.

“This feels nice,” he said as he lazily stroked his hand up and down her side.

“It does.” She’d always loved sleeping with him like this, all tangled together. Hearts beating against one another until they seemed to synchronize and become one.

In the month since she’d moved out she’d missed this horribly and hadn’t slept well because of it.

Now she tucked her head beneath his chin and inhaled deeply, loving the smell of him, masculine flesh with the faintest hint of the cologne he wore. The scent always struck her as a mix of ocean breeze and clean cotton and reminded her of times like this. Long days on the beach and sensuous nights along the boardwalk.

She inhaled deeply again, wanting to take in that smell and hold it inside forever much like she hoped she could keep him with her forever.

“You can,” the little voice chastised, but she shut it down.

The morning would come soon enough and with it the moment of deciding what they would do next.

For this moment, she was going to enjoy the now and being with him. Savor every second because she didn’t know what the future might bring for them.

The slight tension in her body communicated her mixed feelings to Chase and he understood.

While he thought he’d made some headway tonight in showing her that he could be the man she’d met and married, it would take time to show her that he was serious about being that man again.

So he didn’t press. He just stroked her back and relished the feel of that creamy skin beneath his palm.
